Religion and Politics: What Are Your Values?

In December, I posted two blogs explaining why I am a Democrat (you can view them by clicking here and here).

This evening I came accross a video by the Christian Democrats of America that reflects my feelings and beliefs about politics and religion so well I want to share it with you, my readers. I realize that the majority of evangelical Christians identify as Republicans, and I would love to hear what you think about this video.

  2. I am an independent when it comes to political values. Neither side truly addresses my concerns. As a CPA, I follow finances pretty close. Our federal debt is $16.4 trillion. Some of that debt is held by hostile foreign influences. We have unfunded liabilities, which means that we need money invested now to support promises already made, to the tune of $53 trillion, for a combined debt of $69 trillion. This is almost $10 trillion more than all the wealth in the US combined. Neither side has been the proper stewards of our finances.

There are parables in the bible in Luke and Matthew on stewardship of money, investing and hard work. These are lessons lost in our overly political world. I supplied a quote from 1st Thessalonians which is how I choose to live my life.

"make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody."

Notice the last part, "that you will not be dependent on anybody."

Our dependencies are growing, and the 2012 financial statements of the United States, as audited by the Government Accountability Office, came without an opinion, but an advisory that we are on an unsustainable path.

As usual, you challenge us with thought provoking posts.

  4. I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat. It is an interesting video and persuasive on a certain emotional level. It is obviously part of a campaign by the Dems to reclaim the traditional conservative and Christian members that they lost in the last decades to the other parties. The problem I see here is false piety due to over generalizing and falsifying Jesus' intentions. For example, while I believe 100% that we should feed the poor as Christ did, and do good to those around us, it is wrongfully applied politically and even spiritually. If a man should not work, and by that I mean unwilling, according to Apostle Paul " he should not eat." She speaks of "family values", as if they are "God's values", and claims the Dems represent those values. The indisputable facts are that the major playing politicians of the party(the same is true of the opposite) include same sex marriages, and abortion rights as premier "family values". So in this case "family values" should be equated not with anything of God, but with "family rights" which apparently includes the right not to work and still be supported; to free access to health care; to secular education etc.None of which is supported in scripture.

By far the worst aspect of this, and the largest misapplication of Christ's commands here, is the idea that voting fulfills the command to do good works. Jesus asked us to each personally do good to others, not leave it to organizations, or the state to perform. Righteous voting is acceptable to God, and collectively people can do more good. You do not have to be allied politically with any secular society to accomplish these goals.
